Approval active substances

Approval of an active substance is granted for a defined number of years never exceeding ten years. After that, the approval must be renewed.

The basic principle in the BPR is that a biocidal product must be authorised before it can be made available on the market or used in the European Union or European Economic Area. This takes place in two consecutive step:

  1. The active substance is evaluated by a member state competent authority and, provided the criteria are fulfilled, is then approved for a specified product-type (PT) by the European Commission.
  2. The biocidal product consisting of, containing or generating the approved active substance(s) must be authorised at national or Union level.
